Our Story: A Century of Community Banking

Since opening our doors in 1919, Bank of Newington has stood as a pillar of strength, trust, and service in the heart of Southeast Georgia. Born from a vision to provide dependable, relationship-driven banking to our neighbors, we’ve remained steadfast in our mission for over a century. While much has changed in the world of finance, our commitment to personalized service, local decision-making, and long-term relationships remains as strong as ever.

The Bank of Newington was chartered in July 1919. In 1991, the bank moved to a new office in Newington, Georgia, allowing space for our team to better serve our customers. Seven years later in 1998, a second branch opened in Sylvania, Georgia. This expansion helped take care of all the financial needs of our customers in Screven County. As the bank continued to grow into new markets, the decision was made to open a branch in Springfield, Georgia in January 2019. Now, the bank will open a fourth location in Rincon, Georgia in July 2025, to serve all of our customers in Effingham County.

From humble beginnings in the town of Newington, we’ve grown thoughtfully, now proudly serving Screven, Effingham, and surrounding counties with four full-service branches. But growth for us has never been about size—it’s about deeper roots. Our team is made up of local bankers who know your name, understand your goals, and work side-by-side with you to build brighter futures.
